So, I was skimming slashdot, when I come upon this list:
[link] It's a list of no less than
75 movies slated for the next 3 years based on comic books. Now, I've got no problem with comic book movies, I think it's a great medium for them to get animated. What I DO have a problem with is that interspersed with the superheroes and hard-boiled cops are some much more familiar titles, such as Cowboy Bebop, Dragonball, Ghost in the Shell, and Akira, and it just pisses me off.
Animation is just barely coming into it's own in America, which is undeniably the beating heart of cinema. For decades past, animation has been something for children, overlooked as a serious artistic medium. Japanese animation has finally begun to change it, and now that the lethargic, oblivious Hollywood media giants have realized these movies are profitable, what do they decide to do? Completely undermine what they stand for, and make American-produced, live action remakes. What utter bollocks.
Truthfully, I hope the movies are terrible. It might just convince a few people that there are things you can do in animation that can't be accomplished with all the film, CGI, and stylized post-processing effects in the world.
